Last night was Placencia’s annual Christmas Boat Parade, and what a magical evening it was.
All the boats participating in the parade launched from Buba Wuba’s Grill and Smoke Shack at approximately 5:30 pm, so we headed down there at around 4:00. Buba Wuba’s closed for a few months for renovations and what we found was a completely different space. The bar and tables and chairs had been moved in order to take in the full view of the lagoon and receive the full effect of the all important breeze.

There was quite a crowd gathered, many of whom were dressed in festive colours or costumes

The boats were lined up and waiting to go.

I think this is probably one of the few times when something happens on time in Belize, due to the fact that the boats have to arrive at Placencia Pointe just after sunset. So, at 5:30, everyone who was going in the boats, took their places, turned on their lights and began to make their way up the lagoon.

Including Santa

In the meantime, we also made our way up to the Pointe. People had already started to arrive. The Pointe was beautifully decorated

and there were quite a few stalls selling various wares

But first, refreshment from the bar.

We sat on the steps of the pier to get a good view of the boats when they came in and to watch the sun set over the water.

Afterwards, we made our way back through the crowds and saw this little girl dancing

We all met at a nearby bar and had a few more drinks before heading home. All in all, it was a truly magical evening.
