Long before Michael and I left Canada for a new and exciting adventure, we used to have a small glass of port wine or sherry after supper every night. It was one of those small pleasures that make life even better. Since coming to Belize, we haven’t had an opportunity to buy port wine which is why, when The Little Wine Bar invited us to an port wine tasting evening, we jumped at the chance.
Anthony, our expert Sommelier from The Grape Escape, was hosting.
He served four different types of port wine and gave us the history and information of each one. The Little Wine Bar served a small charcuterie plate that paired perfectly with each wine
We found a couple that we liked and were delighted that we could continue our tradition of a lovely glass of port wine on our veranda after dinner.
The next day, we joined a group of friends at the Placencia yacht Club for drinks and appies at sunset.
We fantasized about owning this mini cruise ship
Another evening of good friends and good food
Then, on Christmas Eve, we got the very sad news that our good friend and owner of Strange Brew Bar & Grill, Terressa, had passed away after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Terressa was much-loved by everyone and she had been very instrumental in helping us with our own business. It would have been much harder without her kindness and advice.
Christmas day was quiet this year. There was no trips to the mall, no jostling through throngs of people to buy the perfect gift, no stressing about spending too much money – none of that. Just a lovely stroll down Main Street and the Sidewalk with stops along the way for lunch and a cocktail.
This Christmas was the first year that I didn’t cook a huge dinner. Instead, we chose to go out for Christmas dinner to the Placencia Beach Club with friends
where someone else cooked a delicious, three-course meal and brought it to our table. We ordered a bottle of wine and we ate, drank and were merry.
The days in between Christmas and New Year were spent on the beach and at our shop
and there was a memorial for Terressa at Strange Brew Bar & Grill that, I think, the entire Village attended.
New Year’s Eve was spent at home. We barbecued pork chops and Michael made a New Year’s Eve drink with cranberries and bubbly. The perfect end to an incredible year.
