Yesterday was Independence Day in Belize – September 21, 2022, – and Belize turned 41 years old. And what a party it was, the main event being a carnival parade.

If you’ve been to this tiny country you know that Belizeans are so proud of where they were born, but it really shines through on the 21st of September.

Two Awesome Placencia Parades – Firefighters and St. George’s Caye Day

This weekend past, we had two parades back to back – and the best is yet to come! In my previous post I mentioned that September is the most anticipated month of the year and it all started on Friday evening.

Every year, our volunteer firefighters have their annual barbecue and a parade afterwards. A crowd of us gathered at Strange Brew and cheered them on as they made their way through the village.

This September markets the 41st anniversary of Belize gaining it’s independence from Britain and the first time in 2 years that they’ve been able to celebrate, so it should be especially revelrous.

I must confess that I’ve been sticking to the fruits and vegetables that I’m familiar with – pineapples, mangoes, guavas, papaya, avocadoes – these are the fruits of my childhood. But recently, I was introduced to some fruits that I’m not familiar with and I was pleasantly surprised. And so I decided that it was time to try all the fruits and vegetables Belize has to offer – good and not-so-good – and today I’m going to start with Breadfruit.
